4 things I’ve learned since starting meditation in October

I’ve been meditating for two-ish months now, first for 20 minutes twice a day, now for 40 minutes twice a day…in a month I’ll be meditating for an hour twice a day, time permitting.

Here’s what I’ve learned since starting back in October:

  1. Not every meditation is going to bring you peace, joy, love, and ponies. Some meditations will be about frustration, trying to get somewhere, reminiscing on the past, and planning your day…and that’s okay! The point is, you’re sitting with yourself…At least, that’s what more experienced meditators tell me.
  2. Sometimes you just don’t have time to meditate (I know they say MAKE time if you don’t have it, but sometimes I don’t). What I like to do is break up my meditation when I can. If I’m in line at a store I’ll tell myself that I’m quieting my mind, stilling my thoughts, and focusing on meditation. Same if I’m at a stoplight. These are excellent opportunities to remain present and SURRENDER to the fact that we are not in control, at this time!
  3. You can meditate anywhere, it doesn’t have to be on a meditation cushion in your room. I have meditated in my car, on my couch, and on my swing in the backyard. If you have a safe place to sit, go ahead and try it!
  4. Finally, be okay with knowing that you may not get in both sessions every day…do the best you can with what you’ve got. Life is not a perfect science, and neither is meditation. The point is you’re trying. That’s what matters.

What does your meditation journey look like? What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced? The biggest challenge I’ve faced has been finding the time (or making time!).

Happy day, friends (:

  1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on meditation, Bri. My biggest problem is trying to quiet the monkey mind. I am learning that even a five-minute meditation is rewarding and that it’s okay for me not to have 30-min meditations every single day.
